I have 25 years experience in the database field, beginning with IBM DB2, specialising in Tandem NonStop SQL and in the last few years branching out onto SQL Server.

My core experience is with business intelligence (BI) solutions & strategy, database modelling, design & performance tuning, large scale ETL systems infrastructure and data migrations.

During 2011, I established and managed a new data services team for a small to medium sized business in the retail sector and went on to define the business intelligence strategy for the company.

Throughout 2012, I provided BI consultancy and SSIS ETL development for the retail business as well as continuing to manage and administer a large Tandem NonStop SQL BI system for a leading multinational insurance group (as I have done for the last 11 years).

I subscribe to the Kimball “dimensional modelling” methodology and attended the “ETL Architecture in Depth” course run by Ralph Kimball and Bob Becker in April 2011.

This year my focus has returned to data architecture & ETL design and I have had the good fortune of attending Andy Leonard’s ”Zero to SSIS” course, hosted by Technitrain in London. I highly recommend this course for anyone wishing to quickly get on board SSIS.

I am an active member of the SQL Soton User Group and am delivering my Star Schema Primer session at SQL Santa 2012 in London on December 14.
